Passend zu der Thematik folgen zwei Schülerberichte auf Englisch:

Auswandererhaus (A report by Jette & Nicole)

On Wednesday, the 23rd of November, the whole year 9 went to Bremerhaven to visit the Auswandererhaus. We went there with the English classes because we have been talking about emigration lately. So the Auswandererhaus fitted perfectly. At the start everyone got a flyer with an i-card and a personal emigrant. With this card you could listen to audios and other interactive stuff. We also got a quiz which we had to answer during the visit. First we saw the harbour of Bremerhaven in the 19th century. There were people from many different decades who all had something in common (the figures were out of wax and looked quite real but also a bit scary). They all were emigrants who wanted to leave their home country. The next room was an archive where you had to look for your emigrant and listen to their story. After that three different models of ships (Bremen 1, Columbus, Lahn) were exhibited. And the coolest thing was that you could actually visit these ships next! You could see how the people lived on the ships. Then you arrived on Ellis Island and got to listen to the next part of your emigrant´s story. To get the permission to go to New York you had to answer different questions such as where you are from, what you want in New York etc. If you got the permission to go to New York you visited the Grand Central Terminal (it looked so real!) with some old rebuilt shops. Next you could look at the next part of the exhibition, the immigration to Germany. You could listen to the different opinions from immigrants about the immigration laws of Germany. At the end there was a small cinema with short films about emigration and immigration. After that you could research the history of your own family. Overall you can say the trip was really cool and we would definitely recommend visiting the Auswandererhaus yourself.

REPORT 2

Auswandererhaus (A report by Nico)

On the 23rd of November 2022 our year 9 went to the Deutsches Auswandererhaus. For the students it was completly free because we got some money from the Startklar-fund. Before we went into the house, we got separated into four groups so we wouldn't get in all at once. After the introduction we all got a quiz and an I-Card with a picture of an emigrant. The quiz was full of questions about the emigrants we got and the way they got to America. In the Auswandererhaus itself we started at the pier near a ship. Around the house there were many stations where we could use our I-Cards to e.g. hear something important for our quiz. We got to see many wax figures that looked like they were real. We got to see three different types of ships and what they look like on the inside and much more on the way to America. After we finished our quiz, there was a cinema and we could see where our ancestors came from on a monitor. There was also a restaurant with really good but also expensive food. After around three and a half hours we went home.
